Abstract
Cathepsin-D is considered to be an independent prognostic factor in breast cancer patients from many other studies. We have performed immunohistochemical assay with polyclonal antibody specific to the cathepsin-D in paraffin blocks of one hundred
and
one breast cancer specimens. All the patients were female and positive ratio of cathepsin-D was 58.4%(59 cases). These results were compared with ER status, tumor size, lymphnode invasion and with the age of the patients. In the patients with age
less
than fifty years old, thirty four cases(52.3%) were cathepsin-D positive, and twenty five cases(69.4%) were cathepsin-D positive in older than fifty years of age. In the relationship with size of tumors, ten cases(50.0%) were positive in the
tumors
smaller than 2 cm, thirty six cases(62.1%) were positive in the tumors with the size between 2 cm and 5 cm and thirteen cases(56.5%) were positive with the tumors larger than 5 cm. With respect to the axillary lymphnode involvement, twenty five
cases(55.6%) were positive in the negative group and twelve cases(57.1%) were positive with the group less than four lymphnodes involvement and twenty two cases(62.9%) were positive in the group four or more lymphnodes involvement. In the ER
negative
group nineteen cases(55.9%) were positive and thirty one cases(58.5%) were positive in ER positive group.
In the results of our study, there were little relationships between cathepsin-D and other classical prognostic factors including estrogen receptor in breast carcinoma patients.
